Agentic AI Overview

There’s a lot of buzz around AI right now, and a question we are being posed quite frequently is – what is Agentic AI, and how does it differ from the Generative AI tools many are becoming familiar with?

It’s a crucial distinction. Most people are getting familiar with Generative AI, like Google’s Gemini models, which are incredibly powerful at creating content; text, code, images and understanding complex information, including multimodal inputs and long-context reasoning. Agentic AI takes this a significant step further. It’s about AI systems that can do things and get work done. An AI Agent is designed to understand a goal, make a plan, and then autonomously use various tools – which prominently includes leveraging the power of Generative AI like Gemini – alongside other enterprise systems, APIs, or data sources, to execute a sequence of actions and achieve that goal. So, while Generative AI might help you understand a customer’s query or draft a response, an Agentic AI system could manage the entire workflow: from a Google-like search across your enterprise knowledge, to uncovering insights in hidden data, to taking specific actions that transform how your organisation engages with customers. It’s about moving from AI providing information to AI taking action and uplifting organisational capability.

Real World Impact

We’re seeing a rapid uptake of Generative AI, and now Agentic solutions. Internally at intelia, for instance, we’ve embedded Agentic AI into every employee’s experience – from knowledge management and finding specific documents or experts, to automating workflows like employee onboarding, and even enhancing project status reporting. We believe in using the tech we champion. For our clients, a recent example involved a large Australian financial services company. They aimed to dramatically improve their internal knowledge discovery and operational efficiency. intelia designed and implemented a solution on Google Cloud, leveraging the Gemini family of models, to create an enterprise-wide intelligent search and insight generation capability. This ‘Google-like search for the enterprise’ allowed their teams to instantly find precise information across millions of internal documents and data sources. The impact was immediate: a measurable reduction in time spent searching for information, faster decision-making, and the uncovering of previously hidden data trends that informed new service offerings. It truly demonstrated how these technologies can uplift organisational capability. We’re seeing similar excitement across many of the 600+ real-world use cases identified by global organisations at Google NEXT, and we’re now helping Australian clients ideate and implement these.
